Reports

Thermal paste dissociation in FEASTMP modules (March 2019)

Following the observation of oil residues on the modules, an investigation was carried out to find the origin and composition of the oil and to evaluate the possible consequences of its presence. A complete report is available.

Failure of FEAST2.1-based modules in the CMS pixel detector system (physics run 2017)

Starting on October 5th, 2017, DCDC converter modules started to fail in the CMS pixel detector system, and about 5% of the converters were lost until the end of the run (winter shutdown). This problem was investigated deeply, while mitigating provisions were applied to the system. Measurements at the CERN IRRAD facility, in May and July 2018, were instrumental to reproduce and understand the problem. Three reports are available for download about this infamous event:

  • A short executive summary with the most relevant consequences for the users.

  • A summary of all the measurements performed in the period January-September 2018 and how they led to unravel the mechanism at the origin of the problem.

  • A detailed report of the two irradiation tests performed at the CERN IRRAD facility, where it was eventually possible to reproduce the same damage mechanism observed in the CMS pixel system.
